Abstract:

Periodontal disease is described as an inflammatory condition, in the worst scenario, resulting in tooth loss and tissue destruction, associated with an exacerbated inflammatory immune response. This leads to the release of inflammatory mediators such as, cytokines and bone resorption regulators. An association has been established between the increase in the concentration of certain immunomediators and the severity of periodontal disease, highlighting their role as biomarkers of high diagnostic and prognostic potential. Currently, the diagnosis is based on clinical and radiographic methods, which are effective in assessing the severity of the disease, but do not allow for an assertive differentiation of the disease activity or the risk of progression. Thus, here is a need for an analysis of new inflammatory activators, detectable in GCF/saliva fluids, which allow a better definition of the actual state of tissue inflammation and allow the differentiation of periodontal health status from periodontitis stages.
