Ivan Marcelino Langa has a bachelor's degree (2018) in Forensic Laboratory Sciences and a Master’s degree (2021) in Forensic Laboratory Sciences and Techniques, at the University Institute of Health Sciences (IUCS, CESPU). From 2012 to 2015, he worked at the Maputo Central Hospital (Mozambique) as a clinical analysis technician where he acquired skills in the collection, handling and analysis of biological samples of hematologic, biochemical and microbiological nature. In 2018, he had the opportunity to join the R&I Unit IINFACTS (Institute of Research and Advanced Training in Health Sciences and Technologies), as a full-time collaborator. At that time, he was developing an undergraduate project entitled "Otimização das condições de derivatização para formação de diastereoisómeros de drogas quirais psicoativas", in the scope of his bachelor's degree studies. He further pursued his scientific path in the field of Forensic Toxicology, and, in during his master’s degree he was able to develop wastewater-based epidemiology studies. His dissertation entitled: "Analysis of psychoactive substances in surface waters" was publicly defended with great success, which allowed him to obtain the highest classification of 20 values (out of 20). This result reflected his great dedication to his work. As a result, he published two articles in international peer-reviewed journals (as first author), namely “Wastewater analysis of psychoactive drugs: Non-enantioselective vs enantioselective methods for estimation of consumption” in Forensic Science International (a Q1 journal), and “Gas Chromatography Multiresidue Method for Enantiomeric Fraction Determination of Psychoactive Substances in Effluents and River Surface Waters” in Chemosensors (a Q2 journal), as well as presented a few poster/oral communications in scientific meetings. His skills and autonomy in analytical protocols and techniques such as Solid Phase Extraction (SPE), Gas Chromatography (GC) and Liquid Chromatography (LC) for the quantification of psychoactive drugs in wastewaters as well as other matrices, and his deep knowledge in the field of ecotoxicity (e.g., experience in toxicity tests in aquatic organisms) gave him support and conditions to be admitted as a research fellow in the ongoing FCT project “Ecotoxicity and enantioselective bioaccumulation of psychoactive substances” (ENANTIOTOX, ref. PTDC-CTA-AMB-6686-2020). He is a member of TOXRUN (Toxicology Research Unit, IUCS-CESPU) since 2021, where he has been collaborating on few ongoing multidisciplinary projects. Recently he was invited to lecture (as a monitor) the practical classes related to chromatographic techniques of the Curricular Unit of Instrumental Methods of Analysis of the Integrated Master Degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences and of the Bachelors in Biomedical Sciences and Forensic Laboratory Science, at the University Institute of Health Sciences (IUCS-CESPU).
