Paulo Afonso

Paulo Afonso has been serving as an Assistant Professor in the Integrated Master’s Degree in Veterinary Medicine program at the Cooperativa de Ensino Superior Politécnico e Universitário (CESPU) since December 2024, where he also coordinates the Veterinary Medicine in Shelter Institutions course. Simultaneously, he has held the position of Invited Adjunct Professor since September 2024 in the Bachelor’s Degree in Veterinary Nursing at the School of Agriculture of the Bragança Polytechnic University (ESA-IPB), where he has been collaborating since 2019. Between 2017 and 2024, he served as the Veterinarian in charge of Cantinho do Animal – Centro de Recolha Oficial Intermunicipal de Animais de Companhia da Associação de Municípios da Terra Quente Transmontana (CRO AMTQT).
In July 2024, he completed a PhD in Veterinary Sciences at the University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro (UTAD), with the thesis entitled "Infectious Diseases in Shelter Medicine in Portugal – An Epidemiological Approach from a One Health Perspective." The thesis was awarded the highest distinction of Muito Bom (Very Good) and represents the first PhD dedicated to Shelter Medicine – a field of special interest in which he has actively worked, conducted research, and been an invited speaker at various institutions.
He earned a Master’s Degree in Veterinary Medicine from UTAD in 2013, presenting the dissertation "Atlantoaxial Instability in Dogs," graded 18/20, following internships at Referência Veterinária, Alcabideche (Portugal), the Cornell University Hospital for Animals, Ithaca (United States), and Ars Veterinaria, Barcelona (Spain). In 2017, he completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Local Administration at the School of Communication, Administration, and Tourism (EsACT)-IPB.
He is a member of the Animal and Veterinary Science Center (CECAV), the Associated Laboratory for Animal and Veterinary Science (AL4AnimalS), the Mountain Research Center (CIMO), and the Associated Laboratory for Sustainability and Technology in Mountain Regions (LA SusTEC). He has authored scientific articles in indexed journals and communications published in conference proceedings. Additionally, he serves as a reviewer for international journals and is a member of the organising and/or scientific committees of various conferences. He also participates as an invited speaker and supervises undergraduate and master’s degree students.
He is a member of the Portuguese National Veterinary Association, the Association of Shelter Veterinarians, the National Association of Municipal Veterinarians, and the Shelter & Charity Veterinary Association. His main areas of interest include Shelter Veterinary Medicine, Veterinary Public Health, Infectious Diseases, Parasitic Diseases, Epidemiology, and One Health.
