Hassan Bousbaa

Hassan Bousbaa is an Associate Professor of Cellular and Molecular Biology at the Universitary Institute of Health Sciences (IUCS) of CESPU, since 1998. PhD in Life and Health Sciences (University of Paris-Est Créteil, France, 1993). Post-doc in 1994 at Institut de Recherches Scientifiques sur le Cancer, CNRS, Villejuif, France. Post-doc fellow (1994-1998) at the lab of Molecular Genetics of Mitosis of Caúdio Sunkel at IBMC/i3S, of the University of Porto, then a lecturer of the GABBA PhD program at the same university (1998-2007). Director of the CICS research center at CESPU in 2007, and leader of the Molecular and Cellular Biology group of the same center. He was the Director of the IINFACTS (2012-2021), in charge of organizing and promoting research activities within CESPU, and Leader of the Cancer Research Group in IINFACTS. He is now a researcher and member of the Directive Board of the R&D unit UNIPRO at IUCS-CESPU. Hassan's research focused on unveiling the mechanisms of cell division (mitosis) in somatic cells in order to understand how errors in chromosome segregation arise and lead to genomic instability in cancer. He was part of the pioneering team that identified and characterized the genes involved in mitotic checkpoint signaling, such as Bub1, BubR1, Bub3, and Mad2, in Drosophila melanogaster, with great impact in the field (Journal of Cell Science 1997 110: 1979; Chromosoma 1998 107(6):376; Journal of Cell Biology 1999 146(1):13; Journal of Cell Science 2004 117(Pt 9):1757; Development 2004 132(20):4509; Molecular Biology of the Cell 2008 19(4):1798; Cell Cycle 2008 7(12):1763). His current interests include exploiting the clinical relevance of this information to identify novel cancer diagnostic and prognostic markers, as well as to develop novel therapeutic strategies to kill cancer cells or increase their sensitivity to antimitotic agents (Cancer Lett. 2018, doi: 10.1016/j.canlet.2018.10.005; Scientific Reports 2021, doi:10.1038/s41598-021-83743-7). His team collaborates with doctors to provide patient biological material. He has published >65 peer-reviewed publications cited >2000 times and has h-index 24 (Web of Science ResearcherID: K-5947-2019), and h-index 27 (Google Scholar ID: Vn1ukfsAAAAJ). He acts as a reviewer in many journals in the field and in international fellowship and grant application Evaluation Panels (AICR-UK; Wellcome Trust UK; FNRS-Belgium; Belgian Foundation against Cancer; ANR-France). He is the Editor-in-Chief and the founder of the recently launched journal "Scientific Letters - ISSN 2795-5117" and is a member of the Editorial Board for several journals in his research field. Since 2015, he is the Director of the Biomedical Sciences PhD program at IUCS-CESPU.
